Freestanding Bathtub Buying Guide

A freestanding tub can be an elegant and luxurious addition to any bathroom. Whether you are designing a bathroom for a new house, remodeling an existing bathroom or just looking to make a change to your bathroom. However, if you are thinking of buying a freestanding bathtub, there are a number of things to consider. This freestanding bathtub buying guide will help you sort through the concerns surrounding the purchase and installation of a new freestanding tub.

Tub Size

The first thing you should take into consideration when shopping for freestanding tubs is how much space you have available. Since bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side, you should make sure that you can install a tub and still have space to move it around. Most freestanding tubs range in size from about 53 inches in circumference to about 71 inches in circumference. While most tubs are rectangular or oval in shape, some round tubs are available. This gives you plenty of options that fit in your available space.

Types of Tubs

Freestanding tubs are available in styles that fit your existing decor. For example, clawfoot tubs and tubs with other ornaments or decorative elements tend have an antique or classic look, ideal for bathrooms decorated in the farmhouse or Victorian style. Round or oval tubs in a solid color with no ornamentation look good in modern bathrooms or bathrooms with simple design schemes. Large rectangular tubs with steps and a deep bathing area are the perfect addition to large, elegant bathrooms.

Other Tub Features

The hardware on your tub is another major consideration. This includes the faucets, knobs and optional shower attachment. Often, hardware is purchased and installed separately from the tub, but your contractor can suggest some compatible hardware.

Some other things to consider when picking out hardware for a freestanding tub include the finish on the metal. Consider whether the other fixtures in your bathroom are silver, gold, bronze or another color and choose hardware that matches.

Available Materials

Freestanding tubs are available in all of the materials that attached showers and tubs are. The tub areas are made of waterproof materials that repel mold and mildew. The most common and cost-effective type of material for tubs is acrylic, but tubs are also available in cast iron, marble or other materials. These materials tend to cost a premium, but are highly durable and unique.

Installing a Freestanding Tub

Placing a freestanding tub in your bathroom is relatively simple, but hooking the tub up to the existing waterlines can be a more involved process. If you are exchanging an attached tub for a freestanding tub, water pipes in the bathroom may have to be rerouted slightly. This generally requires the service of a professional and can put your bathroom out of commission for at least a couple of days, so be prepared to make other arrangements while your bathroom is being remodeled.
